Managing a school library involves so much more than just carrying out the day-to-day operational routines of acquiring, organising promoting and disseminating resources. It also includes policy development, budgeting, planning, monitoring and evaluation.
Below is a list of recommended resources to help and support anyone running a Prep School library.
Prep School Library Guidelines (2016)
These were compiled by the LIPSSEE co-ordinator at the request of the Director of Education at IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools). They have been ratified by the Association and in November 2016 were circulated to the Heads of all +650 member schools. The guidelines are important because they offer a recommended level of provision for all Prep School libraries. Primary School Guidelines (CILIP)
These Guidelines were revised in 2014 by ASCEL, CILIP and SLA and are designed to take you through the steps to create an excellent library, get children using it and refer you to organisations that can help at each stage.
This is intended to “help you set up and run a school library, or give you ideas for improving what you already have; to point you towards inspiration and information on flexible, innovative and exciting library spaces and the development, maintenance and management of the resources held within them”
The School Library Association (SLA) produces a series of publications entitled SLA Guidelines and Case Studies, which give practical help to all those responsible for running a school library and build up into a useful reference resource. Most conclude with a case study, a further reading list, and other useful sources of information. The link will provide access to the full range of titles and their costs.
If you are a member of the SLA you will also have access to a number of free Online Advisory and Support Documents that provide advice and guidance on many different subjects including copyright, preparing for Inspection, internet safety, recommended spending levels etc.
The National Literacy Trust is an independent national charity dedicated to encouraging people of all ages and cultures to engage with books and the written word. It conducts research into reading, literacy and school library provision in the UK and publishes its findings regularly
The National Libraries of New Zealand – Services to Schools website contains a range of guides, worked examples, templates and practical tools to help New Zealand librarians manage and develop their school libraries but these can easily be adapted to suit our purposes here in the UK
